Winter steelhead
Absolutely awful fishing report.
Cold rain, sleet, snow, heavy hail, lightening, high water,
deep snow and slush, ice, and high winds.
The fishing otherwise has been decent and it sure hasn’t been that
crowded. I had to cancel a ton of
trips due to snow despite awesome river conditions, which was a bummer. Now the roads are better but the rivers
are in rough shape. Hopefully
after the next week or so the worst of our winter weather will be over. Here is Jim, up from California somehow
smiling despite being absolutely dumped on by every kind of foul weather ever
devised. Mike Z and I had a great
group who hung in for a day and a half of fishing in the worst weather I have
seen in a long time. Yesterday the
four of them managed to get four steelhead and no one got hypothermic, which
seemed like the best we could hope for.

Not sure if he’s smiling or if his jaw is frozen shut.
Jim thanks for the trip a few weeks ago and put me down for week 23 on the contest.
Lee
The 23rd. week. I appreciate your confidence, I will not disappoint you. Hey even though the fishing was tough, that was an awesome trip. I love fishing in that weather almost as much as I like getting out of it.
Jim
Thanks Lee……and Jan
Hey Jim!
Good to hear that you are “working” and not simply enjoying Jack and swinging fly tugs! Yeah, yeah, I hear you about the weather…just remember, that weather first tormented me, up here in Alaska first!
Last week I went down to the lower estuary only to find the entire estuary frozen! It was time for single malt!
Keep up your quality work….any time in March to rip some?
Rich
Rich,
O.K.
Its so cold in Alaska they have to pay people to live there.
Yes, I just spoke with Dan today and invited both of you guys out in March, we need to speak about dates soon before I am all booked up. Just got back from swinging a couple of runs on the upper Sol Duc, maybe I’ll head down low before it gets dark.
Jim
Hey Jim–
So true about the State having to “pay” us crazies to live up here! I enjoy reading your daily threads and teasing my buddies up here with your fish!
I can drop down anytime the last week of March (21 thru 29). I’d be fired up to swing flies with big sticks! It’s been a long time since I’ve tossed a ‘cator, but I’m sure it will all come back. Let’s keep in touch. I am 30:70 about the Bellevue Show–only becaue I have several tree pythons ready to drop eggs!
